Direct Access
In 1979, Maryland passed direct access legislation, which allows you to go directly to a licensed physical therapist without a physician referral. Maryland Direct Access laws indicate that there are no restrictions or limitations whatsoever for treatment even without a referral.
However, each individual insurance carrier may have different rules, and may require a referral or pre-authorization.
